CPEs That Only Cost Time

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The IT field is a constantly changing and challenging career field.  Being successful in this field requires professionals to continuously improve their skills and maintain adequate levels of competency on new trends, techniques, tactics, and technologies.  As a certificate holder (e.g., CISSP, CISA, PMP), it is not only expected but also required to maintain the certification.  Most major certification institutions (i.e., ISC2, ISACA, GIAC) require [certification] holders to accumulate a minimum number of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits annually.

There are many vendors that offer training on various topics that will provide professionals with verified CPEs based upon the number of hours the course lasts.  Courses can be costly for individuals footing the bill themselves and for those who must cover the difference between what their employer covers and the cost of the course.  Keep in mind it could take multiple courses to meet the minimum number of required CPEs.  The exorbitant cost of CPEs can be a deterrent for professionals who want to become certified and ultimately will negatively impact their ability to progress.

Fear not. Certificate institutions allow professionals various ways to earn CPEs and do not require they cost a dime (Check with the certificate institution’s CPE policy).  There are many organizations that offer free webinars, symposiums, and conferences that provide you with CPEs for your attending.  It will only cost time.  Below, I have listed various ways to earn free CPEs.
